Huize Monnikenheide was founded in 1969 by Wivina and Paul Demeester and provides support to people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The project was divided into two phases: on the one hand, the replacement new-build for the Eiken, and on the other, the thorough renovation of the forty-year-old Monnikenbos cluster building. For the Eiken, a rational, elongated building measuring 9.2 by 46 metres was designed, entirely on a single storey. The expressive, folded façade winds around the existing tall trees while preserving their growing space. To safeguard the roots as much as possible, linear strip foundations were constructed in the transverse direction, with wide-span floor slabs placed above, appearing to float above the ground level. The bay spacing follows the rhythm and dimensions of the rooms. The superstructure is lightweight, consisting of load-bearing walls in traditional concrete blocks, steel beams aligned with the foundation grid, and a lightweight timber roof structure. The Monnikenbos cluster building was completely reworked and brought up to current standards. By removing the central multipurpose hall, three larger, autonomous houses were created for heterogeneous residential groups, along with a separate therapy building. Here too, the structural interventions were conceived in a rational and traditional manner. The existing load-bearing structure in concrete blocks was fitted with new lightweight timber intermediate floors to reduce the load on the foundations and thus avoid any intervention on them. The building footprint was extended using lightweight steel structures and a greenhouse-like construction for the pitched roofs. In addition, targeted openings were made to create new sightlines and a more logical circulation.
