In Liedekerke, the space between an existing sports hall and swimming pool is filled with a new youth center. Starting from a clear plan, an engaging spatial experience is generated using simple means. The design is based on an irregular Cartesian grid, in which the lines alternate between large and small spacings. The smallest bays are playfully outlined with masonry. These are occupied by storage and technical spaces and act as the supporting walls for the roof. Along the grid lines parallel to the existing buildings, heavy glulam primary beams support the secondary roof beams. The primary beams incline upward toward the front of the building and cantilever significantly, creating a canopy with an open entrance hall. They also frame views through the building toward the fields beyond. The heavy timber roof structure gives identity to the space and results from both architectural and structural considerations, with fire safety requirements having a particularly strong impact.
