Abattoir plans to develop new workshops and parking areas on its site. The “Manufakture” building will bring this vision to life. Meat-cutting workshops and other food-related production activities will be built on the ground floor. Above the workshops, two floors will house a public car park with around 420 spaces, intended to accommodate market visitors during weekends. During the week, the parking facility will serve other users of the site or people from outside, such as Erasmus Hogeschool, for example. A public function, still to be defined, will be located on the roof. The architectural firm Baukunst is addressing the spatial challenges. Thanks to its position on the site, the “Manufakture” building creates a new public space and establishes a direct dialogue with the historic hall. What also makes Baukunst’s design so unique is its extreme neutrality in terms of spatial use, offering remarkable flexibility. Abattoir aims to continue emphasizing sustainability with this building, not only by focusing on carbon-neutral production, but also through conscious material choices, anticipating flexible future uses of the building, and continuing to encourage a mix of activities on the site. The building itself consists of two superimposed duplex volumes, each 16 meters high. Two large loggias have been placed on the north side of the building, providing space for vertical circulation. The façade facing the listed market hall, around which a large urban square will later be added, becomes an active frontage enabling interaction with visitors to the site.
