The City of Antwerp aims to enhance accessibility by improving transfer points and making it easier to switch between different modes of transport. These smart connections offer users the required comfort and act as landmarks at strategic points along mobility routes. The project proposes a series of canopies, whose structural system can be repeated as needed and adapted in size depending on their location within the city. The canopy structure is composed of vertical elements – the masts – that support a suspended roof surface creating sheltered areas. The canopies will consist of assembled isosceles glass triangles with 2.5 m sides, supported by a 7.1 m mesh of primary beams suspended from the columns. The use of glass requires a thorough analysis of structural deformations, which must be limited. In the first case study, at Antwerp-South station, the column is anchored in a new bridge deck that is currently being built as part of the station’s expansion by NMBS (Belgian Railways).
